Countertops in solid surface aren’t as widely celebrated as natural stone countertops, but that doesn’t mean they don’t come with their own list of benefits. Of course, there are solid surface countertops pros and cons to be had, but for the sake of this article, we plan on focusing on only the highlights—because this material is something we’re excited about!

There are plenty of reasons to be excited about solid surface. It’s affordable, attractive, and doesn’t require much maintenance at all.

Solid Surface Itself

Within solid surface countertops, you’ll find a myriad of ingredients, like acrylic, resins, and pigments—all mixed together with mineral dust. This mixture is first heated, then left to cool in a mold that creates the shape it ends up with. Varying levels of the present ingredients make for varying aesthetics, so changing up the look of this material isn’t difficult. This is a major reason why it can work in so many styles of kitchen; its aesthetics are known for being versatile!

Uses for Solid Surface

Solid surface material can be used for all sorts of things. Beyond countertops, which is their most popular use, they can also be used for desks, workspaces, tables, or bars. You’ll find this material in both residential and commercial spaces, in kitchens and in bathrooms.

Using solid surface is great if you’re working on a budget but you don’t want your space to reflect that. This material has a way of looking classy without breaking the bank.

Maintenance Level

Since solid surface countertops are a nonporous material, they don’t need to be sealed like natural stone countertops do. Because there are no pores, there are no places for germs and bacteria to hide, which makes solid surface sanitary.

These countertops are extremely easy to clean—the nonporous nature has a hand in that too. If you stick to dish soap and warm water and avoid harsh chemicals, your countertops will stay looking as good as new.

Durability Level

Solid surface is well known for its durability. If you have a busy family and you don’t have time to worry about the state of your countertop, solid surface is perfect.

But that doesn’t mean solid surface is indestructible. It might sustain scratches if you chop food directly on its surface, which is why it’s always wise to use a cutting board. The same can be said for hot items—while solid surface stands up pretty well against them, use a hot pad or trivet to stay on the safe side.
